This award is given in recognition of the outstanding contribution and service in the field of education.
A dedicated teacher, Jayabrata Bhattacharya, from Birpara, is being honoured with the prestigious Shiksha Ratna award this year for his contributions to education. Reportedly, Bhattacharya began his career as a police sub-inspector in 1999 but had always aspired to be a teacher.
He has been serving as a teacher at Birpara High School for the past 22 years and is currently working as the head teacher of the school. The aim is to educate the children of the tea estates. He is making relentless efforts to get school dropout students back to school. The teacher said he will do this work in the future, as well.
There are many tea gardens in the Birpara area of the Alipurduar district located in remote areas. The shutdown of a tea estate disrupts the education many times of the local children. Meanwhile, he is bringing in students to continue with their education.
The teacher, regarding receiving an award, expressed that he chose the teaching career to help build the people and society. Bhattacharya further acknowledged receiving the award and expressed gratitude to his supporters for their role in helping him achieve it. He also mentioned that the award is a collective achievement shared with everyone. He said, “I chose teaching as a profession to build people and society.”
A few years back, the Bengal government felicitated 61 teachers with Shiksha Ratna on the occasion of Teachers Day. Among the 61 awardees who were felicitated, 21 were professors of colleges and universities, 15 were primary school teachers, and 23 were secondary and higher secondary teachers. Two of them were Madrassa teachers.
