More than 80% of parents often use technology to find information that can help them answer their kids’ questions, revealed a recent study commissioned by Amazon Alexa and conducted by Kantar among over 750 parents across six cities in June 2024. It further added that about 54% of surveyed parents often feel that they don’t have instant answers to kids’ questions.
The survey indicated that 52% of the respondents instantly search and answer accurately if they don’t know the answer. While 44% of the surveyed parents admitted to making up answers on the spot and only 3% of the parents ignored the question or changed the topic to stop the kid from asking questions
Over 90% of the parents surveyed agreed that they encourage their kids to ask more questions as it helps them continually grow and learn about new things while 92% agreed that they learn new things in this process of responding to their kids’ questions. Some of the top questions asked by kids include — “How to make a car?”, “How big is the universe?”, “How does an aeroplane fly?”, and “How do fish breathe underwater?” Food, animals, nature, general knowledge, holidays, technology, and movies emerged as some of the top topics that kids enquire about, the survey stated.
About 60% of surveyed parents said that they often find themselves stumped when kids ask seemingly easy questions such as, “What season comes between winter and summer?”, “Why do parents have to work?”, and “Why do we wash vegetables?”, among others.
Around 37% of the parents admitted to deflecting answers to their partner while 63% said their kids become more curious and ask questions when watching TV. Among the other activities that ignite curiosity amongst kids include traveling with 57% parents agreeing to it, studying with 56%, outdoor activities with 55%, watching content on handheld devices with 52%, and listening to conversations among adults with 50%.
