Sunlight Reflection From Mirror Triggers House Fire In England’s Rochester

A horrific fire broke out in a house in Rochester town of Kent in England following the reflection of the sunlight from a mirror. Sam and Michael from Rochester were shocked to discover that the mirror on their bedroom desk was the root cause of the fire in the house. The couple have issued a warning to keep shiny objects away from the window following the accident. The couple felt they were lucky that no harm was caused to them in this incident. They vowed to share their story to help keep others safe. They urge other households to move reflective objects away from the windowsills and out of direct sunlight. The accident has gone viral now.

Sam Wilkinson, 48, from Britain, told the South West News Service about the horrific fire that broke out at his home in Rochester, Kent, on July 18. The registered nurse and her partner Michael were at home when they smelled a dangerous smell.

“I was working in the office right below the room that caught fire, and I could smell something burning, like burnt toast,” Michael recalled. “Then I heard the smoke alarm on the top floor go off,” he added

A panicked Michael ran upstairs to wake Sam, after which the couple ran out of the house and called emergency services. Two fire engines were sent to the scene and crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames on the third floor.

Fortunately, while many items in the bedroom were destroyed, including a melted TV and blackened walls, the flames were largely contained by a closed door that prevented them from spreading to other parts of the house.

According to the firefighters at the scene, the sunlight hit the small makeup mirror and set the room’s curtains on fire. Sam said, “We redecorated the room just a few days ago, so we weren’t sure what caused the fire. When the firemen told us that it was the mirror, we wondered how could a mirror do this?”

Learning from the incident, the couple said “We now know that anything shiny or reflective near a window where sunlight hits it can cause a fire. Our advice now is to just be careful and educate people in your household about the dangers,”

Crews also managed to rescue Tigger, the family cat.
