In the same stance, an herbalist named Pandi (45) from Madurai is making headlines for selling foods prepared with herbal plants. He has been preparing and selling various varieties of rice, soup and juice, using various herbal plants. He has only studied till third standard and has been working at a chicken stall in Madurai Sunday market since he was seven years old. He has been spending his time practically practising in the herbal medicine shop.
Since the work of the shop is over in the morning, he has been doing work such as picking herbs and looking after the herb shop in the afternoons. After 12 years in this area, following the things taught by his boss Mookan, he went to various areas around Madurai in search of herbs and picked the herbs along with his wife. Now, he prepares all the herbal dishes.
From 8 am to around 2 pm, there is a crowd at the Pandian’s Herb Restaurant in the Madurai Race Course area. There is a variety of herbal food available in this shop. They sell fenugreek meal that cures ulcers, Katkukodi Alva made from Katkukodi herb to prevent liver damage, and chapattilly juice for women for uterine and menstrual problems.
Similarly, there are many types of soups, such as soup made from herbal plants called sugar killer for diabetic patients, soup made from Punarnava herbal plants called Mookratti to clean the kidney, soup made from herbal plants in Ana Nerunji to remove kidney stones, and other types of soup made from herbal plants. He also sells dosa, chutney, sambar and vadas made from 15 varieties of herbs.
