Delhi Govt Plans To Replace Driving Licenses And RCs With Printable Electronic Cards

The government of Delhi is considering replacing the existing smart cards, driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates with electronic cards. The reports add that these cards will be printable, just like Aadhaar cards. Here are all the details of the report.

According to a transport department official, the Delhi government is reviewing a scheme which was reportedly proposed by the Rajasthan government. It aims to convert the smart card systems to electronic licenses and registration certificates. The transport minister Kailash Gahlot had carried out an order to solve the issues related to the registration of vehicles. He had expressed concerns over the delay of the Registration Certificate delivery. So, Gahlot had directed the officials to take action against the non-compliant dealers.

Going by the reports of the Times of India website, electronic cards will prove to be very convenient for people. The applicants will be able to print out the documents themselves, just like an Aadhaar card. It will also feature a unique ID and QR, which the traffic police will use for verification.

A senior official of the department revealed further that the electronic documents could either be printed or accessed through apps like DigiLocker or mParivahan. It gives the citizens a very comfortable option to present their documents upon requirement.

Between 2023 and 2024, the Delhi transport department had issued 1.6 lakh licenses and 6.69 lakh registration certificates by May this year, as per the reports. Under this new plan, only electronic driver licenses and electronic registration certificates will be issued, stated the official.

The PDF format of the documents will be available on the Parivahan Sewa portal for download. It will include a QR code for authenticity confirmation and related links will be sent to the registered mobile numbers of the applicants.

Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot had ordered the department to see the feasibility of implementing the digital RCs, which aimed for better convenience for the residents of Delhi.
