‘Google Prioritises Candidates Easily Adapting To The Fast-changing World’: Sundar Pichai

Despite thousands of issues, Google has maintained its reputation as a top employer across the globe.

Getting a job at Google is a dream for millions. To achieve this, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai has recently spoken about some skills that you must have. While speaking on the show The David Rubenstein Show, Pichai shared insights on the kind of candidates the company looks for especially in engineering roles. He said that Google prioritises software engineers who can easily adapt to the fast-changing world. He said that alongside technological skills, a candidate should also have the capacity to tackle challenges.

While talking about the work culture of Google, Sundar Pichai mentioned that innovative ideas are very much encouraged in the company. He added the company’s tradition of offering free meals to the employees is not just a perk but a way to foster bonding and community building. Sharing his early experience, he explained how informal conversations at the cafeteria of their office often led to some innovative ideation of important projects.

Despite thousands of issues, Google has maintained its reputation as a top employer across the globe. Pichai revealed that as of June 2024, the company had more than 179,000 employees and 90 per cent of job offers extended were accepted by the candidates.

Former Google recruiter, Nolan Church shared important tips about the hiring process. In an interview with Business Insider, he said that candidates seeking jobs in the company should first understand Google’s values and mission. Nolan advised that applicants should mention specific examples from their professional experience to showcase how well they align with the company’s culture.

In an interview with CNBC, Church mentioned that people should ask for realistic salaries during negotiations. He said that asking for a 40 per cent to 100 per cent hike over basic pay often leads to disqualification. Church explained asking for unrealistic salaries indicates the candidate has insufficient research about the company.

Google often maintains a rigorous and high-standard hiring process. The company mainly gives preference to candidates who have the required technical skills and creativity, and contribute towards the company’s positive work culture.
