At Least 1 Killed, Several Injured In Violence During Durga Immersion Procession In UP’s Bahraich

After the death of one of the devotees, the people in large numbers gathered and blocked the road outside the hospital.

In a shocking incident, at least one man was killed and five others were injured after a clash erupted between two groups of people during Durga idol immersion procession in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Ram Gopal (22). Others who were injured were identified as Ranjan (30), Sudhakar Tiwari (22), Divyang Satyawan (42), and Akhilesh Bajpai (52). All these were a part of the idol immersion group.

The incident occurred under the Hardi police station area in Mahsi Tehsil during which stones were pelted and gunshots were fired at the procession in the Maharajganj town. BJP MLA from Bahraich’s Mahsi, Sureshwar Singh said that the clashes were triggered when some miscreants disconnected the microphone of the procession. This led to an argument between two sides, and amid the chaos, some people started pelting stones on the procession and the idols.

After the death of one of the devotees, the people in large numbers gathered and blocked the road outside the hospital. As per some reports, people involved in the immersion procession vandalised houses and vehicles were set on fire. Reportedly four houses and several two wheelers were burnt by angry protestors. Similar processions were cancelled in Fakharpur town and some other places. The protesters demanded stringent action against those responsible for stone pelting.

The local police along with the troops of security forces rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
