Using ‘Lungis, Bedsheets,’ 5 Undertrial Prisoners Climb 20-foot Wall To Escape From Assam Jail

Five undertrial prisoners, accused of cases filed under the POCSO Act, escaped from Assam’s Morigaon District Jail on Friday, said officials.

Five undertrial prisoners, accused of cases filed under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, escaped from Assam’s Morigaon District Jail on Friday, said officials.

The inmates first broke the iron grille of their cell and used lungis, blankets, and bedsheets to cross the 20-foot prison wall, evading security and leaving local authorities in an alarming situation.

Those who escaped the jail were identified as Saifuddin, Jiarul Islam, Nur Islam, Mafidul, and Abdul Rashid, all of whom were serving time for POCSO-related offences.

The jailbreak incident took place between 1 am and 2 am, said Morigaon’s district commissioner Devashish Sharma, adding that they were arrested from Morigaon and Sonitpur districts.

Responding to the incident, the local authorities have launched a large-scale manhunt and recapture the accused. The security measures have been heightened across the district, said officials.

An investigation has also been launched to ascertain how they coordinated and executed the escape, added officials.
