Inspired by Maa Durga, Bengal’s Bongaon Launches ‘Dashabhuja’ Plan for Women’s Safety

Sources in the administration said the project, which has 10 aspects, aims to eradicate evil from society, just like the Devi kills demons to protect the world

The Mamata Banerjee government, on the back foot after the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder and the Kultali case, has now decided to focus more on the safety of women in the state, with Bongaon Police launching the ‘Dashabhuja’ [10 hands] security plan for the all-round protection of women.

Inspired by the 10 hands of the goddess Durga, sources said the project aimed to eradicate evil from society, just like the Devi kills demons to protect the world.

Speaking to News18, Bongaon SP Dinesh Kumar said: “The project aims to ensure holistic safety of women and is designed to enhance law enforcement and awareness in both the real and virtual world. It will aim to make both public and private spaces safer for women of all age groups. Preventive, pre-emptive and proactive policing is being done under this project.”

Let’s take a look at the 10 aspects of the ‘Dashabhuja’ plan.

Niriksha: Security Audit in Establishments

Sources say rigorous security audit is being carried out in the district, with nearly 500 schools, colleges, hospitals, and private establishments being asked to install CCTV cameras at strategic locations and form internal committees to look into sexual harassment complaints. It has been directed that separate toilets be built for women. Sources say police are keeping an eye to ensure the instructions are implemented.

Raksha Kavach: Quick Response

Two policemen with a car will be stationed at strategic locations in every Gram Panchayat and municipality. The cops will be equipped with smartphones and body cameras. The control room will directly send them information of any distress call and they will be expected to reach the spot at the earliest. Earlier, distress call would go to the nearest thana from the control room and then sent to the cops on duty. However, under the new system, police should reach the victim within seven minutes. The exercise is known as Raksha Kavach.

Shakti: Self-Defence Training

Self-defence training will be imparted to girls from classes 6 to 12. A total of 130 schools have been identified where training will be given twice a day for three months.

Niti Satata: Legal Action And Ensuring Justice

It has also been instructed when it comes to crimes against women, the SoP must be followed without fail, which includes not disclosing the name of the victim, ensuring fair and time-bound probe and protecting the rights of survivors.

Varta: Communication

Communication and counselling are crucial and sources in the administration said victims must be informed about the progress of the case.

Drishti: Continuous Monitoring

Police will keep an eye on about 200 CCTV cameras from the control room.

Jagriti: Awareness

In more than 700 primary schools, children are being informed about good touch and bad touch.

Pratishtha: Recognition

Certificates of appreciation will be given to police personnel and common people who help protect women.

Samata: Gender Sensitisation

Pragati

Technical advancement and integration of technological advancement

In Bengal, where infiltration is a big concern, trafficking is also a major issue but police sources say they are trying their best to change the mindset of society.
