According to the Drik Panchang, Goddess Parvati once removed her outer golden skin in a bid to kill demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha. She came to be known as Maa Kalaratri. She is believed to be the most ferocious form of Parvati. With a dark black complexion, she rides on a donkey and has four hands. While her right hands are in the Abhaya and Varada Mudra, she carries a sword and an iron hook in her left hands.

With her ‘Shubh’ or auspicious power in the ferocious form, Goddess Kalaratri is also known as Shubhankari.
