Nilgiris Administration Sets Up Selfie Point Using 2,500 Plastic Bottles In Ooty

A selfie point called I Love Ooty has been set up with 2,500 plastic bottles in the Charring Cross area to create awareness about avoiding plastic bottles.

Tourism is an important source of revenue for Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu. It is home to several hill stations that tourists visit during the summer. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), commonly known as the “toy train”, attracts tourists as its journey includes extensive views of the hills and forests. Nilgiris is known for its eucalyptus oil and tea. It also produces bauxite. Some tourists visit to observe the lifestyles of the various tribes in the area while others visit the tea and vegetable plantations of Nilgiris. To create awareness regarding the harmful effects of plastic and increase tourism, the Nilgiris district government officials have set up a selfie point with the help of 2500 plastic bottles.

The Nilgiris district attracts tourists from different parts of the country every year. They carry single-use plastic water bottles in their hands, unaware of the plastic ban in the Nilgiris. The checkposts are in place to create awareness of the harmful effects of plastic use. With the efforts of the district administration, a selfie point called I Love Ooty has been set up with 2,500 plastic bottles in the Charring Cross area of Ooty to create awareness about avoiding plastic bottles.

Tourists enjoy taking photos near a selfie point set up to mark the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat scheme of the central government. It features water with illuminated coloured lights created in Charing Cross during the British era. As this place is an important part of Utagai, this design is made with plastic bottles.

As per reports, private charitable organisations are planning to set up these types of designs using plastic materials in various areas to create awareness. It is in collaboration with Ooty Municipality. Tourists who enjoy the beauty of Ooty at night are excited about the new selfie point in the city.

Gautham from Chennai Arc Kingdom organisation said, “We have been making this design for five days using 2,500 plastic bottles available in the Nilgiris district in the testing booths. We are creating such awareness in ten places across Tamil Nadu. Minimise the use of plastic as much as possible. Let us all realise the harm caused by the use of plastic and pave the way for the progress of the country.”
